Session Prep-guide
I am thrilled to get to know you & I feel honored that you have chosen me to capture some magic. I’m like, really excited.
Below are some helpful tips for your upcoming session
How do I stand?
Leave that to me! I will give you prompts and poses as we move through the session. The best thing you can do is take a deep breath and know that I’ve got you.
Attention Grown-ups: It is going to feel awkward at first, don’t fight it. We will get some laughter in and shake that off! Then I will pose and prompt you, and probably make some corny jokes because that is how I roll. And couples, I will be asking you to do some flirting with your partner. If you aren’t comfortable with PDA, let me know ahead of time because I am one sappy lady.
If you have small kiddos, I need you to promise right here and now that you won’t apologize when they do kid stuff. I have two small kids, I get it y’all. But the best thing you can do, is sit back and let me direct them. Yes, that is correct, you do not have to be in charge! I know, it sounds incredible…and it is.
But seriously…
I’ve got you and your whole crew. If you have any specific poses or needs, please let me know.
What do I wear?
Comfort. If you are comfortable in what you are wearing, we will get some amazing photos.
Style. If it isn’t you, it isn’t right. Now, it can totally be the “special occasion, I feel fabulous” version of you that you don’t see every day, but it should still feel like you.
Accessorize. Scarves, jewelry, hats, wraps…these will all add a richness to your style. Pick one or two accessories, but keep it cohesive and understated. For shoes, keep in mind that we may be walking through grass or gravel depending on location.
Textures and Layers. A great denim jacket or chunky sweater can add so much to a look. If you like solid colors and simple pieces, think about adding a layer to create depth and interest.
Colors. I love a good color palette for family or couple sessions but don’t let it stress you out. The magic isn’t in the clothes, it is in you (cheesy yes, but also true). Find a balance of complimentary colors that blend together. Natural, earthy tones show up really well on camera, but if a jewel tone is what looks good on you, do not be afraid of a burgundy or navy.
Patterns. I LOVE patterns and pattern mixing. Now that I think about it, maybe a little too much. But, there is a balance as with all good things. Be sure to stay with a similar color palette and use smaller patterns when mixing.
Inspiration. If you are having trouble deciding on what to wear, pick one center piece that you love and build it out from there.
If you just read that and thought “Brandy, I don’t know what the eff you are talking about”, I have some good news. Along with being a photographer I am also, deep down to my core, a style lover. I can give suggestions on style, color palettes, and where to buy what.
Trust me…
I love to style clients!
What do I bring?
Props: Props are not necessary for a great session but if you have something special you want to incorporate, bring it!
Snacks and Drinks: I am not above bribery folks. You will receive zero judgement from me if you have to bribe a toddler with a fruit snack or a grown man with a cookie. I like both of those things, I get it.
How do you prepare?
Relax. It can be a bit intimidating to be in front of a camera. Let me be your session sherpa. You just need to show up on time, and be clothed.
I will also preach a little self-care because if I am doing my job the way my heart wants it to be done, you will leave the session feeling as though you have treated yourself to something special. You want to find that balance where you feel great and are still yourself. For me that means eyeliner and a bold lip, maybe I curl my hair. For you that may mean straightening your hair or wearing a real bra. (Do you feel me?). A test run may put you at ease.
Get your hair and makeup done, buy a new outfit, or wear an old favorite. Find a friend who has a knack for beauty and ask them to doll you up. Or go to the salon and treat yo self! I know some really talented and wonderful folks who provide these services as well. Feel free to ask for referrals.
Treat Yo’self.
It’s session day, so remember…
Enjoy it. Believe it or not, this is an opportunity to pause time and take in the moment. Be present.
Laugh. I have prepared various song and dance bits if you need back up. That is a joke. I will most likely not do that. But I am also not promising that I won’t.
Breathe. When was the last time you really stopped and took a breath? (Just now? Yes! It worked!) A good breath can go a long way, so right before the session…just breath. I’ve got your back because this is what I love to do.
Trust me.
I’ve got you. I am in charge, which means you don’t have to be. Let that sink in.
If you need anything at all, please reach out. See you soon!
