My favorite locations for sessions around St. Louis

We are so dang lucky in the Midwest when it comes to locations. I mean, we are literally surrounded by “magic spots” as I like to call them. A location does not necessarily make a session, but it sure can shape the feeling you have during the session. And it inspires the story I tell with your gallery. So here are a few of my favorite locations in the St. Louis area for a session!

(More locations here: Favorite St. Louis Area Locations Part 2)

Two siblings joyfully frolicking in the prairie land of Broemmelsiek park during a family photography session.

Broemmelsiek Park

Prairie, forest, or water. This place has it all!

Broemmelsiek is located in Defiance, MO and has so many “magic spots” that it is probably my favorite place for sessions. There is gorgeous preserved prairie, full of wild flowers and tall grass. There are trails through the woods that make you feel as though you are lost in a storybook. There are lakes and bridges, and creeks, oh my! Some areas are easily accessible and others require a little hike. It is a choose your own adventure type of place which makes it all the more fun!

*Bonus for us dog folks, they have the best dog park in all of the St. Louis area complete with a giant pond if you have a dog who loves swimming!

Laumeier Sculpture Park

A place to truly be inspired by the art around you.

I know, I keep picking places with names that are hard to spell, but I promise, they are worth it! Laumeier is such an inspiring place. At the intersection of 270 and 44, the sculpture park gives a variety of “feels” from industrial to enchanted forest. Utilizing and interacting with the art here has resulted in some of my favorite images to date. For easy access there are plenty of elements to work with near the parking lot. But for the real “magic spot” in my humble opinion, take a walk through the woods to find a space overgrown with vines and spotted with structures.

Klondike Park

Did you know we had sandy beaches in Missouri?

This location will literally transport you to another world.  The white sand is smooth and soft under your feet and the lake is calm and sparkling.  Add to that, large rocky bluffs and long green hiking trails.

It is a a bit of a drive to Augusta but, oh darn, you will find yourself in wine country.  Pack a picnic for the beach or stop by a few wineries to make a whole day of it!

Your Home

Yeah, I know this is technically cheating but hey, it is a great spot!

Never underestimate your home as a great location to for a session! And sure, you are going to tell me it is messy but isn’t everyone’s house messy? All you need is one sort of tidy spot, near a window or door that gets great natural light. It is a great way to show off a nursery, create a comfortable environment for your kiddos, or just to know where the bathroom is! Sometimes a cozy hour at home is the perfect way to create some genuine magic.

I hope I was able to introduce you to a few new places in the area or at least look at them with a new eye!

Feel free to share any spots with me that give you inspiration. You really can find a great backdrop anywhere from the middle of a cornfield to a downtown parking garage (part 2 coming soon).

I hope we get to work together soon! You can view my portfolios HERE!

Until next time,

B
