A Senior Session Prep Guide
Senior portraits are in my top three favorite types of sessions! To get to spend time with an individual and bring their personality through the lens is my jam! Now parents, I know this is a BIG STEP! I am here for you too and if you cry, I won’t judge. I actually might cry with you :)
This blog post will walk you through how to prep for a session and what to expect the day of! I am also hear to answer any and all questions you have leading up to the day. Let’s do this!
What do I wear?
For Seniors, this is one of the best parts. Style is such a great way to represent yourself!
My number one rule is comfort. That doesn’t mean sweats and sneakers necessarily, just that the clothing fits the person. If you are comfortable with what you are wearing, it will make a big difference!
Style. If it isn’t you, it isn’t right. Now, it can totally be the “Beyonce” version of you that you don’t see every day, but it should still feel like you. Incorporate your interests through your outfits.
Multiple looks. For seniors or any portrait sessions, I would suggest 2-3 outfits. You can include varying degrees of dressy-ness. Examples of combos could be (a suit, and jeans and a sweater) or (a dress, a sports uniform, and a casual look). Feel free to bring several options if you aren’t sure. I have a pop-up changing tent that I bring to each session.
Colors. Consider your location and what colors look great on you. Neutrals always photograph well but don’t be afraid of deep tones as well. A great tip is to look at your background and pick a color that is opposite on the color wheel and that compliments your tones.
Textures and Layers. A great denim jacket or chunky sweater can add so much to a look. If you like solid colors and simple pieces, think about adding a layer to create depth and interest. And we love a good hat, jewelry, and some statement shoes!
Inspiration. If you are having trouble deciding on what to wear, pick one center piece that you love and build it out from there. I also love styling so feel free to share any outfit choices with me or let me know if you need some great shopping resources!
How do I stand?
Leave that to me! I will give you prompts and poses as we move through the session. The best thing you can do is take a deep breath and know that I’ve got you.
Warning: It is going to feel awkward at first, don’t fight it. We will get some laughter in and shake that off! Then I will pose and prompt you, and probably make some corny jokes because that is how I roll. We will get your modeling career of the ground in no time!
How do I prepare?
Relax. It can be a bit intimidating to be in front of a camera. You just need to show up on time, and I will do the rest.
Parents are welcome however, I usually get the most personality if the parents aren’t right there. This is totally your call but if you have a good book or want to scroll Tik Tok in the car while you wait, that is totally fine!
Get your hair and makeup done, buy a new outfit, or wear an old favorite. Find a friend who has a knack for beauty and ask them to doll you up. Or go to the salon and treat yo self! I know some really talented and wonderful folks who provide these services as well. Feel free to ask for referrals.
